Tips For Hosting A Summer Wedding

Updated: Aug 3, 2023

With Manitoba's wild seasonal changes, summer is by far one of the most popular times of year to host a wedding. However, this season does not come without it's own unique set of circumstances that you need to consider. Here are our tips for hosting a summer wedding.

Tip #1: Always have a plan B in case of inclement weather. Summer storms roll in quickly and sometimes without proper notice which means there's very little time to pivot. If wind and rain is expected, we suggest making the call to proceed with your Plan B at least 24 hours prior to your wedding if possible. This allows your venue and vendors enough time to jump into action and prevent your big day from looking "quickly thrown together." Couples who choose Scotswood as their wedding day venue are gifted the Banquet Hall as a backup plan free of charge.

Tip #2: Think about your guests. If you are hosting an outdoor ceremony, make sure to consider your guests' wellbeing. Chances are, some will be punctual and arrive 30 minutes prior to the ceremony start time, meaning a lot of time sitting in the sun in formal (sometimes non breatheable) clothing. Make sure to provide refreshments to prevent anyone from getting dehydrated before the night begins. Explore Scotswood's Infused Water Station as a nice cooling option. Your guests will thank you!

Tips #3: Provide shade. Further to refreshments, you may want to consider renting pop up tents to ensure your guests are comfortable. The summer sun is brutal and your guests will start to get antsy if they have to sit or stand for long periods in the direct sun.

Tip #4: Supplies! Consider supplying your guests with small amenities such as fans, flip flops, bug spray, sunscreen and sunglasses to keep everyone as comfortable as possible. We suggest placing your items in a cute basket next to your welcome sign and perhaps include an alternative sign encouraging your guests to take what they need. Some won't take you up on it but those that do will be impressed by your generosity and thoughfulness.

Tip #5: Dress Code. Consider sending your guests a dress code or rather dressing suggestions so that your guests know exactly how to dress for the venue. Scotswood's ceremonies are currently held in the Estate House Yard, meaning that stilettos and other high heels are impractical and even dangerous while walking from the driveway to your guests' seat. Perhaps also suggest clothing material- Cotton and linen are some of the most breathable options available and guaranteed to allow some of that heat to escape. You may even want to go as far as encouraging light colours to reflect the sun's energy. White, blues and tans are commonly found in most guests' closets and can easily be reached for. Communicating this on your website or invitations elmiminates any surprises and annoyances upon arrival.

The comfort of your crowd should always be near the top of your priority list. If you ensure to implement some of these tips, your guests will be happy as clams and your wedding will go on as one to remember instead of one to forget!
